Preface

Why we need plastic - and have to recycle it.

Light, resilient, tight, hygienic - plastic as packaging material offers decisive advantages. It is not without reason that it is the packaging material that holds together the flow of goods and value-added chains worldwide. This makes it all the more important to see it as a valuable raw material - and to keep it 100% in the recycling process.

How can we guarantee the safe and efficient supply of almost eight billion people and, at the same time, deal responsibly with energy, resources and the environment?

Plastic packaging will make an elementary contribution if society changes its way of thinking: with a sharper awareness of the importance, but also the potential of recycling and with a differentiated, fact-based assessment of the sustainability of packaging.

Unrivalled plastic - packaging functions with sustainability factor.

Did you know?

40% of the harvest in developing countries is lost due to lack of packaging.

The packaging consumption in tonnes would be 53% higher if plastics were replaced by other packaging materials where possible.

As early as 1990, Jokey brought the first bucket made of 100% recycled material onto the market - and helped develop the dual system in Germany.

Our goal: the circular economy.

The longer we actively use plastics in the value-added cycles the more sustainable they become. This requires a globally structured and conscious approach to waste and recycling. As one of the largest manufacturers, we take a special responsibility in this regard. To meet this responsibility, we have developed a guideline on which we measure ourselves and our packaging: the Jokey Eco Concept.

Eco Company

The sustainability of packaging begins with the company that produces it.

As a family business we think long-term. Our future strategy is based on three pillars: solid growth, ecological action and social responsibility. We believe that entrepreneurial success requires a prudent attitude towards people and nature. Our vision is to become climate neutral by 2030.

Our Vision: climate neutrality by 2030.

We are working towards this on many levels: our teams are constantly developing innovative ideas for sustainability in our daily work. Starting with numerous small opportunities to save energy and material and extending to large-scale investments in efficient and resource-saving technologies.

Our action plan

  • Continuous process of renewal in energy-efficient production
  • Product development according to the Jokey Eco Concept guidelines
  • Utilization of machine waste heat for energy purposes

Our strength: our customers and partners.

The long and close contact with our customers and partners is an important source of innovative ideas for us: the cooperation in the development of new markets and the related continuing dialogue provides us with many valuable ideas and impulses, also on the subject of sustainability.

The course for the future has been set.

Our climate strategy includes continuous and intensive investment in resource-saving and energy-efficient technologies at all locations. Our solid financial policy provides us with a secure basis for this and the freedom to act independently of short-term economic interests.

360° responsibility

Our responsibility does not end when a Jokey packaging is dispatched from the factory.

We are actively committed to ensuring that it also returns to the recycling cycle. For this, we are in constant, open dialogue with customers, partners, associations and NGOs.

More than image polishing: we get down to business.

Along the entire value chain.

We contribute our expert knowledge wherever sustainability can be shaped. At the beginning of the 1990s, we were already actively involved in the development of waste infrastructures within the framework of the Packaging Ordinance in Germany. Today we are committed to the global development of a sustainable recycling economy and the protection of our common environment.

We want to be leaders. With real measures for real sustainability.

Among others, we work with internationally active initiatives such as the PREVENT Waste Alliance, Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA) or Waste Free Oceans (WFO). We are convinced that a consistent change in direction can only take place through cooperation between all responsible players from industry, trade, politics and civil society - across borders.

CO2-balance

Climate neutrality is a major task.

As a pioneer in the field of sustainability, our goal is climate-neutral packaging. Until Jokey as a whole is operating CO2-neutrally, we offer our customers CO2 compensation with certificates in sustainable climate projects. Here, we work together with a network of NGOs and other stakeholders.

Climate neutrality by 2030

And until then: compensating the climate balance. The projects supported include registration and implementation according to CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) with Gold Standard certification - the strictest existing standard for climate protection projects. Compensation is voluntary and is carried out by means of emission reduction credits (certificates), which compensate for the amount of emissions generated during the manufacturing process.

Cooperation - the key to success.

In order to find suitable projects for you, we orient ourselves towards professional expertise to promote ecologically sustainable, social and economic action. Within the framework of our innovation programmes, we work together with network organisations and start-ups that jointly develop ideas for a more sustainable use of plastics as a raw material.

Food Contact

For longer shelf life even for food.

Jokey packaging for food contact is produced under the high hygiene regulations of the GFSI standard. In addition, only raw materials are used that meet the legal requirements and are 100% recyclable.

Nothing is more sustainable than yoghurt that keeps fresh until it is eaten.

Our plastic packagings guarantee hygiene and quality and they reliably protect your filling goods from spoilage and damage - over thousands of kilometres. Extending shelf life with plastic packaging is particularly economical, saves valuable resources and protects the climate.

Recyclate packaging in the food sector

Common recycling processes provide recyclates that are not yet suitable for food contact due to the strict criteria. Therefore, we are working on solutions such as closed loops and are following the development of future recycling processes.

Physiologically harmless

Packaging intended to come into contact with food is made exclusively from raw materials that meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 (in particular Article 3) and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. The harmlessness of the raw materials and thus the compliance with the relevant regulations is tested under the most unfavourable foreseeable conditions of use in an accredited laboratory.

Secondary raw materials

The best packaging was once a packaging.

Paints, construction materials, chemicals and other non-food products are just as well and safely packaged in our packaging made of up to 100% recycled material as in new plastics. High functionality thus meets an ecologically valuable contribution to resource protection - with many design options from colour to in-mould labelling.

An idea that was ahead of its time

Jokey has long been manufacturing packaging for the non-food industry from recycled plastics. The post-consumer recyclates (PCR) are obtained from household collections. Our grey recyclate bucket made its first appearance back in 1991, but at that time it had not yet achieved its major breakthrough.

The well-deserved comeback of the recycling container

The attitude towards recycled materials is currently changing: today's environmentally conscious end-consumers want above all sustainable packaging. For producers, not only an ecologically valuable contribution to resource protection is important, but also high functionality and elegant design. Our recyclate containers combine both.

Complete product functionality

In principle, Jokey recycled packaging differs from packaging made of new plastics only in the grey basic colour. They offer the same product protection and have the same "new" effect on the end consumer. In addition, they can be attractively decorated with all options the in-mould-labeling process offers.

Colourful packaging design

Whether you use the grey base colour for your design or use a large label to hide it - you enjoy full design options to present your product at the PoS and win new customers by making a responsible contribution to strengthening a circular economy.

Design options with Jokey Individual

Our vision: recycled packaging as standard in the non-food sector.

With the introduction of the RAL quality mark “%-Recycled Plastics” and our recyclate campaign "grey is the new green", we are setting clear signals in this respect. Because one thing is clear: without the processing of PCR, a sustainable recycling economy cannot be achieved.

Special recyclates

Jokey is a partner of the Waste Free Oceans (WFO) initiative and is also developing packaging with components made of Ocean Based Recycled Plastics (OBRP). These originate from post-use input flows from the maritime industry in the Mediterranean region and the North Sea. The aim is to prevent the disposal of old fishing nets or rigid plastic waste in the sea by taking them back.

Recyclate as messenger

We have started producing our sea-blue Oceanplastic containers in 2019. They contain 25% OBRP and 75% PCR. The printed appeal "keep nature clean" is intended to encourage young people in particular to behave in a more environmentally conscious manner. Therefore, we initially used the RAL-certified buckets as waste collection containers in schools.

Renewable raw materials

Renewable raw materials: a challenge.

Since 2010 we have been working on replacing conventional polymers with bio-based raw materials. However, not everything that regrows is of ecological advantage – that is why we at Jokey only use raw materials that have internationally recognised certificates of origin and composition.

Which kind of biopolymer is really sustainable?

Only an integral view of plastics from renewable raw materials shows whether they are really environmentally friendly. The expansion of cultivated areas for bio-based plastics, for example from sugar cane or corn, creates huge monocultures and thus causes natural habitat loss, species extinction, water shortage, desertification, and the use of dangerous pesticides.

Processing, performance and recycling

Biopolymers used in our production processes must not only meet ecological certification but also other requirements such as our technical standards and those of a modern, efficient packaging as well as being 100% recyclable.

Strict certification criteria for real sustainability

Therefore, we critically look at these raw materials and their environmental performance evaluations in regards to climate impact and biodiversity. And we at Jokey only want to use raw materials from renewable production that can provide internationally recognised certificates of origin and composition.

How much biopolymer is best suited for my product?

The possible proportion of biopolymers varies between 30 and 100 percent depending on the basic material of the biomass and the technical-physical requirements of your product. In our laboratories, we test in advance which basic material is suitable for your requirements and in what proportion.

Material efficiency

Up to 40% reduction in material use since 1990.

Packing as much product as possible with as little material as possible - this maxim has driven our research and development since the early 1990s. With success: in the meantime, we have reduced the weight of our packaging by up to 40% by means of a combination of increasingly efficient and functional designs.

Ultralight art of engineering

As a result of increasingly sophisticated designs, we have reduced the amount of material required enormously over the years. At the same time we have succeeded in significantly increasing functionality: today, our containers are more stable, break-resistant, user-friendly and more appealing - and thus meet the increased demands of our customers.

Less weight, less resources required

As a result of their lower weight, Jokey packagings reduce the ecological footprint: because they use less plastic in manufacturing. And with regard to logistics and transport, they improve the ratio of package weight to fill weight - and thus reduce energy consumption and unnecessary CO2 emissions.

100% recyclable

Only homogeneous packaging materials achieve optimal recycling results.

Therefore, we only use plastics and decorations that are 100% recyclable. Jokey packaging is thus completely recyclable and can be reused as recycled material without any technical quality losses.

Perceived vs. real sustainability

Multi-component packaging often looks sustainable, but it has one problem: to make it reusable, consumers have to separate it into its components before recycling - which rarely happens in practice. Jokey packaging has therefore been designed with homogeneous materials for decades: this means that it is 100% recyclable even without component separation.

100% monomaterial for 100% recycling

Jokey packaging is made of polyolefins, primarily polypropylene and polyethylene. These are ideally suited for material recycling. Jokey packaging is fully recyclable and thus remains in the material cycle as a raw material for many new generations of packaging.

100% emptiable

A package emptied properly is as sustainable as this.

All Jokey packages allow complete access to the contents by removing the lid. This guarantees consumer protection and also simplifies the recycling process, because residual fillings lead to a high level of additional technical effort and cost an unnecessary amount of energy.

0% residual content 100% consumer protection

Jokey packaging allows complete access to the contents when opened. Neither contoured shapes nor technical obstacles impede access to the product. Consumers can thus use and consume it down to the last gram. Thus, manufacturers meet all the requirements of consumer protection.

Less energy required for recycling

Emptied packaging also simplifies the recycling process - because residual contents lead to more waste and high additional technical costs and even to non-recyclability. Emptied packaging, on the other hand, saves costs and energy, increases the recycling rate, and the quality of the recycled material.

Secondary use

Unlimited possibilities for reuse

Jokey packaging is robust, completely emptiable and reliably re-closable. They retain their functionality and can continue to be used for a wide variety of other purposes. At the same time, they remain 100% recyclable at all times. And they help your brand to attract constant attention.

Quality that you like to use over and over again

Packaging is all the more sustainable the longer it is actively used in the recycling value chain. Jokey packaging is ideally suited for this not only because of its recycling ability, but in addition to its durable and functional design. Be it for use at home, at work or for hobby purposes, secondary use offers attractive added value because of its versatility.
